Dear Steering Committee

Doug and I had a very useful site visit to BNL. We much
appreciate Jerome, John and their teams for their time in
discussing status and issues with us. The agenda and talks are
posted at http://www.star.bnl.gov/STAR/comp/meet/PPDGSept2002/
(thank you Jerome for posting this).

Present at the meetings were: Jerome, John, Torre, Gabriele,
Rich, Dantong, David; with several other people (Wenshen,
Brian(?), Tom, Bruce, Scott, Barbara.. ) present at some of the
sessions. Items that arose as a result of the meeting are:

a) STAR are considering looking at MAGDA for the replica catalog
and replica management. It will be interesting to see how easy it
is to generalize MAGDA to a second experiment

b) STAR uses MySQL mirroring very successfully. Their databases
are several 10s of GBytes. STAR have a well developed monitoring
system for mysql databases which is general and could be useful
for other experiments (e.g. for MAGDA). Someone is possibly
developing a GSI enabled mySQL. These might be useful
development for PPDG to endorse/help/??

c) STAR now have Grid web pages and logo
http://www.star.bnl.gov/comp/Grid/

d) Doug, Jerome, Eric will write a PPDG news briefing showing how
the HRM/GridFTP system for sustained data copying between LBNL
HPSS and BNL disk has helped STAR physics analysis.

e) STAR is deploying their scheduling system. They need to work
towards distributed disk for next years data processing needs.
Jerome and Doug will arrange a meeting between LBNL Star, Arie
and Derek, and ANL STAR.

f) MAGDA is being further developed and is ready to test RLS when
it is available. In line with the PPDG strategy of collaboration
with WP2 it is suggested that ATLAS look more into collaborating
with them on replica management/catalogs ie WP2 and MAGDA.

g) ATLAS testbed and Wisconsin will arrange a face to face
meeting to discuss errors/faults that occur on the testbed and
what overlap/commonality there is between these and those on the
CMS testbed.

h) Scott Bradley who is head of security at BNL is interested in
participating as part of SiteAAA and/or other GGF security work.

i) ATLAS/BNL plan to implement a system to extend the VO
information and interface to site account creation and management
software. If this can be integrated with the new site account
system it should be. There should be well defined interfaces for
between the Grid VO and the Site accounting software.

j) Phenix data management is starting to look into how to
"gridify" their software. They may be interested in seeing if
they can be unfunded collaborators with PPDG. We suggested they
send an email to ppdg-steering if/when they wish to look into
this further.

k) Matthias has left BNL. Jerome is the new STAR PPDG Team lead.
He was introduced to his new responsibilities such as quarterly
reports etc.

comments/questions/corrections are welcome

Thanks

Ruth
