Our second attempt at utilizing the SMD information for direct photon/background discrimination this time using the popular variable

   
    The analysis was performed with the direct photon and 2006 jet simulation files, with the same energy thresholds/saturation cuts made before.  We plot the results for the phi strips (x axis) and eta strips (y axis) together.

Conclusions:
There is a clear discrimination power to this variable at high values of f (as expected), although much of the signal overlaps with the background at moderate values of f.  It is interesting to note that the discrimination power is relatively robust to the energy thresholds imposed.
