I looked at the QA that Murad did over the BTOW looking for hot towers for 2005: http://cyclotron.tamu.edu/star/2005Jets/QA/hotTowers/.

 He looked at the number of hits in each tower above 0.2 GeV for a each trigger in a list of runs. He then fit that distribution to a gaussian and looked at the towers that fell more than 10 sigma from the mean. He repeated for only towers contained in a jet, and then for hits in towers in a jet above 4 GeV. Towers that were more than 10 sigma from the mean in these tests were added to his list.

I then looked at the time dependence of the status tables for 2005:
