Update to CAVE geometry / DX magnets

02/04/2010 Update

Adding in the shielding to the east and west tunnels.  I still need to add in material surrounding the beam pipes for the shield walls between DX and D0 magnets.  I need more information about the DX magnets, because according to the drawings (see Akio's note below) the DX magnets should extend further back into the tunnel than the current geometry indicates.

01/29/2010 Update

Implemented CAVE as PGON with Rmax = largest dimension in cave and tunnel.
Added blocks of concrete to establish the true dimensions of the floor, ceiling and one wall of the cave and tunnel.

01/28/2010 Notes on Geometry Code

  1. CAVE is defined in geometry/cavegeo.g
  2. HALL is a cylinder.
  3. CAVE is an air volume carved out of the HALL.
  4. CAVE shape is a PCON (polycone...) basically a cylindrical geometry.  Easy enough to build a PGON... but you know... the wide angle hall predates RHIC and any possible design study for STAR...
  5. The actual HALL and CAVE are asymmetric.  We can use a symmetric structure, and add concrete blocks to 'shim' it to the correct dimension.
  6. Single beam pipe needs to be extended back to the DX magnet.  Double beam pipe back to the D0 magnet.
  7. Shielding should be added.
  8. ZDC is currently implemented as a simple box, no SMD.  Hits store Eloss only.
  9. Beam pipes are implemented in the ZDC geometry (zcalgeo) as well as the PIPE geometry (pipegeo).

Copied here to include some drawings and discussion in the documentation.
Hello

While working on Forward hadron calorimeter (FHC) geometry in GSTAR,
we found the existing cavc/tunnel and dx magnet geometry files are not
reflecting the reality. I've already talk with Victor (and Jason), but
we would like to request to update geometry files for those.

Here are some drawings from John Scheblein for east and west tunnels:

http://www.star.bnl.gov/protected/spin/akio/200908/tunnel/EAST-TUNNEL-WAH-1006.pdf
http://www.star.bnl.gov/protected/spin/akio/200908/tunnel/WEST-TUNNEL-WAH-1006.pdf

The tunnels in GSTAR are currently cylinder. Actual cave would be a
cube with

         279.65 + 329.95 = 609.6 cm wide in x (north/south)
         426.77 cm high in y (top/bottom)
upto z=+-20m deep (in beam direction) is fine as is

The center of the tunnel is at

         x = - 25.15 cm
         y = + 426.77/2.0 - 127.00 = + 86.385 cm

from beam (x=0, y=0) i.e. off to north and up for both east and west.
This modification may requries careful look of the codes so that objects
inside those tunnels stays in the correct location while center of tunnel
won't be anymore at beam line.

In current geometry files, some of DX magnet elements are in, but
it does not include the outer "shell". Next are drawings of DX magnet
vaccum vessel "shells" (thanks to John again!). We'll placing the FHC
right next to it. So we would like to put those into our geometry.

In addition to the request for the FHC studies, I know that there is interest in implementing the ZDC as built for polarimetry studies.  Yuri also pointed out that there are longer term questions about understanding the backgrounds at high luminosity from beam-line particles punching through the shielding.
