Abstract:

The STAR experiment at RHIC presents measurements of the semi-inclusive distribution of charged-particle jets recoiling from energetic  direct photon and neutral pion triggers in pp and central AuAu collisions at \sqrtsNN=200 GeV, for jet resolution parameter R=0.2 and 0.5 over a broad kinematic range. Medium-induced jet yield suppression is found to be larger for R=0.2 than 0.5, indicating the angular scale of jet shower modification due to quenching, with suppression magnitude similar for direct photon and neutral pion triggered data. Theoretical model calculations incorporating jet quenching do not describe the full set of measurements. This multi-messenger analysis provides new constraints on the physical mechanisms underlying jet quenching.

Summary and Conclusion:

  1. This measurement at RHIC of jet quenching based on the coincidence of direct photon and pi0 triggers and reconstructed jets in central \AuAu\ collisions, together with comparison distributions in pp collisions
  2. Significant recoil jet yield suppression is observed for both trigger for R=0.2, with markedly less suppression for R=0.5, providing a new measurement of the angular scale of jet shower modification due to quenching
  3. The jet pT dependence of the yield ratio for R=0.2 and 0.5 in pp collisions provides new insight into jet production mechanisms at low jet pT. This ratio in AuAu collisions likewise provides significant evidence for medium-induced intra-jet broadening within 0.5 radians.
  4. This multi-messenger analysis provides new constraints on the physical mechanisms underlying jet quenching.
