Jan 6 activities

Jan 3 was a snow day.

started the day trying to work on preparing the spare TPC gas system computer with the gas system software, following a recipe provided by Peter Kravtsov (through step 2 of 10, about 40-50 minutes of time unfortunately; rest should be quicker if no problems encountered)

moving in 1006C (trailer re-arrangement) - wasn't my choice to deal with this today, but spent a couple hours on it.  Got a lot moved, still need another couple of hours for my remaining stuff, plus time to dispose of excess equipment.

Annual SGIS certification testing started today, knocking off power to most circuits in the DAQ Room.

  • Shutdown (and restarted) OLP
  • moved daq-sw2.starp switch to a UPS

applied RHN updates (about half of the systems)

worked with Jim Thomas and the tpc_top fonts issue on astaire .  The magic to remember is "medm -displayFont alias", plus editing the fonts.alias files for 100dpi and misc (/usr/share/X11/fonts/) to include "widget" aliases.

discovered l4evp has a disk problem - the RAID array with the / filesystem has 2 of 3 partitions failed, thus is not useable.  Could be a complete loss.  I see no evidence that I ever got a warning email about disk failure, despite mdadm being cofigured for it to send to starsupport, and mdmonitor running.  Could the disks have failed simultaneously (or have been perceived to have failed simultaneously because of a bug perhaps) - that would potentially prevent the email from going out, since the file-system switches to read-only.
