Abstract:We discuss the case for a zero degree calorimeter at RHIC and space constraints on such a device. Two GEANT simulations of Quartz fiber calorimeters are then studied and compared to the corresponding case of scintillator sampling. We find that the Q-cal calorimeter does provide some improvement in response uniformity near the calorimeter edge to hadronic showers (due to the filtering out of wide angle shower products). This may be an advantage when space is limited and the calorimeter dimensions are small.
