Abstract:The feasability of adapting NA49 cluster morphology measures to STAR TPC hit reconstruction is examined. Such measures provide a wealth of information about cluster shapes. It is found that the cuts resulting from these measures permit the cluster deconvolution algorithm in the hit finder to search 45% less clusters in the inner sector and 15% less clusters in the outer sector without appreciable loss of efficiency. Because this algorithm is computationally expensive, these measures represent a substantial savings in event reconstruction time. Furthermore they have applications in identifying secondaries and improving chi**2 fits for tracks, in estimating dip and crossing angle, and in event by event physics.
