Abstract | : | Theoretical calculations of ionization spectra in a TPC will give better approximations to measurements than the Gaussian functions used currently. Discrimination for dE/dx particle identification, PID, can be improved by taking into account the length of particle tracks. In order to understand that, a distinction must be made between ``dE/dx", the truncated mean dE/dx along a track, and the mean truncated mean dE/dx of many tracks for a given particle type. Several methods for PID inspired by the simulations are proposed. Examples are given for pions and kaons. |
