  1 / βTOF is used fot PID purpose. Below is the distribution of   E /P vs 1 / βTOF after applying TPC PID cuts (nSigmaPion and nSigmaElectron)  Real electron tracks should peak around β =1 . By looking at the distribution it seems the signal is pretty much isolated. And the block of events where E /P >1.5 kind of indicates that they could also be real electron tracks  because those tracks also have  1 / βTOF ~1 . If they were mis-matched pilu up tracks they couldnot have 1 / βTOF ~1 .  

Here's and distribution of  E / P vs Δβ-1 / β-1|E . Ideally the mean of this distribution should be  0 . Again theres block of events with E / P > <E/P> which also with in the mean of Δβ-1 / β-1|E .
