Tracking Efficiency Uncertainty

17.11.2020, The charges to the task force

  1. Conduct systematic studies on the TPC single track efficiency uncertainty on a few standard datasets, e.g. AuAu200, BES, pp200 or 500 GeV etc. It will be preferred that the uncertainty can be evaluated more differentially in pT, eta/y, luminosity etc when statistics allows.
  2. Investigate on any possible improvement in the TPC simulator to improve the efficiency uncertainty, especially for the BES-II datasets.
  3. Expect a report from the task force (to be released as a STAR note) The report should include the above studies, as well as a description on standard procedures to evaluate the tracking efficiency uncertainty for other datasets.
  4. Timeline:  about 6 months - 1 year. If the full efforts are expected to take longer than this, we expect a preliminary report focusing on the findings from 1) to be released in about 6 months.

There was a discussion about using difference between extracted tracking efficiencies for different FXT collision energies. Accoording to Gene it is not clear if separate calibrations for individual collisions energies are needed and it is being now investigated by TPC group.

From discussion of previous Robert's results on probability of hit loss on track it seem that there is higher chance to loose hits in lower pat of the TPC in data compared to simulation. This is bit strange in light of Xianglei's findings about cluster simulations as showed at collaboration meeting. It was suggested that incomplete accounting of dead channels could play a role.

GMT-There is currently ongoing comparison of hits and projections on track-by-track basis. It is not known what causes the difference between the hits projections, but the pinpointed to a P18im library.

K->3pi
It was discussed that after Xianglei tuned the cluster size for isobar data it would be good to compare to them to see the influence on this study.

Grigory update on GMT: Based on the  2016 data, there is are hits found in all detectors (except  one which is dead for long time).
    The missing signal observed by David is related to the cuts which are imposed on the hits.
    We will now rerun the alignment using under DEV2 on run14 AuAu@15GeV data.

Based on discussion with Yuri:
  a) There is possible difference between online and offline cluster-finder. This could cause a difference in the hit finding efficiency at the edges of the TPC sectors. More details can be found at

 b) For fixed-target the effects of space-charge are effectively reducing a TPC fiducial volume by 15 cm. This needs to be studied. The available data sets are at https://drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/blog/fisyak/status-express-production-run-xxi. From these the best seems to be 3p85GeV_fixedTarget_2021 since 7p7 comes from two luminosity periods.

Note:

The observed difference beween SL12 and SL13 seems to hold even when the same daq files are ruconstructed manually under SL12d_embed.
I was suggested that the likely cause is some difference between vertex finder and related track cuts introduced into SL13 library.
