EPD install, calibration and commissioning for Run 21

Results
The results of the 2021 installation following these instructions will be detailed at: drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/blog/rjreed/results-2021-epd-install

Installation

Currently the EPD is scheduled to be installed on Jan 27th.  Due to covid restrictions, the non-BNL EPD team will be reduced to Mike and Rosi.  Fortunately the fiber bundles are still up on STAR and still connected to the FEEs.  Thus we only need to install the wheels themselves.  This takes 4 tall people, so at least 2 additional BNL folk will be needed.  Fiber connections can be done by the EPD team.  A sample work plan from 2019 can be found at: drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/blog/lisa/workplan-installing-epd-25-26-january-2019

Detailed Plan to Rahul is at: drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/system/files/WorkPlanJan2021.pdf

It is sometimes useful to look at the excel spreadsheet of the mapping, this can be found at: drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/system/files/EPD_mapping_12172019_0.xlsx

The mapping of SS, PP and Fiber was recorded at: drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/subsys/epd/operations-2018/what-supersector-fiberbundle-fee-and-sipm-where

Some macros are at: drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/blog/rjreed/epd-macros
Pre-Beam Work

It should be noted that rssh.rhic.bnl.gov is now ssh.sdcc.bnl.gov and so this would need to be changed in all the instructions.  If the usual key forwarding doesn't work, use:
ssh-add .ssh/id_rsa
The daqman host has changed - if you get scary warnings either ask Rosi or Wayne for the magic command.
If things don't work, you can check where you have access at: www.star.bnl.gov/starkeyw/ this uses your kerberos id and password

ssh -Y -A you@ssh.sdcc.bnl.gov
ssh -Y -A stargw.starp.bnl.gov

I have made a clean copy of the code that runs on the *.dat files which we use for many of these calibrations, that can be found on the onl machine at:
/ldaphome/rjreed/EpdReader2021

I noted that my usual jump from stargw to onl using rterm -i did not work, so I had to use:
rterm -i onl12 me

Light Check
Once we connect the fibers we will need to lightcheck them.  This requires that we turn on the crates and the tuff box.  Per the manual (drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/subsys/epd/epd-run-control-manual-0) we will need to run a one-wire scan to connect.  In order to connect the GUI to the TUFF, the monitoring daemon needs to be started on daqman.  Once it is started and the state change is moved to STANDBY it should work.

At this point we should be able to adjust the bias voltages on the SiPMs and see the dark current using the GUI (dashboard1.star.bnl.gov/daq/EPD_UI/).  Unfortunately things were turned off so quickly at the end of the last run I didn't record a dark current file on the last day.  However, I did record one from mid-August (drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/system/files/EPD2020_8_13_16_43.txt) that we can compare to.  The code used to compare 2 files is: drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/system/files/CompareDark.txt

There is a lightleak button on the GUI which turns up the bias voltages to 58V.

For 2021: We need to check on the bad tile/channel from last year and see if it can be recovered.  This tiles is West PP5 TT23 which corresponds to EQ1 board 6 channel 7.  There is absolutely no signal in this channel (not even dark current).

Mapping
The next step is to check the mapping using the 7-patterns test:
drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/blog/lisa/how-check-mapping-vped-patterns-step-step
Last run this was done by Joey (drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/blog/adams92/mapping-test-december-6-2019)

Vped
The next check we can do is the vped check: drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/blog/rjreed/epd-vped-scans-2019
One note - in the instructions above I suggested that we use the zeros file as the baseline.  The problem with that is the negative vped values are not plotted because there can't be a negative ADC.  So this year we need to adjust the default file slightly so that vbias = 0, vped = -50 or so.

Pre-post Check
After that, we can set the bias voltages and should be included for cosmic data taking.  Given the short time that we will have before the run, we will not take enough data to see whether there is a sign of life in each channel.  But we can confirm that we are in the same prepost as the BBC (drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/blog/adams92/pre-post-checking-using-cosmics-and-bbc-dec-2019)

At this point we can start the online monitoring.

After Beam Arrives

A reminder on how to use Run Control specifically to change the labels is at: drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/system/files/UsingRunControlEPD.pdf

Timing Scan
The instructions for the timing scan can be found at: drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/blog/lisa/epd-timing-scan-run-2018
We probably do not need to do such a detail scan, last years values should be ok especially since we will be running 7.7 GeV again.  Checking the details from last year, these values were set at: drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/system/files/epdTiming2020_7.7GeV.txt
We actually didn't recheck the timing or anything as we changed energy so it wouldn't be completely surprising if this was a little different.

Bias Voltage Scan
The instructions are included in this explanation from Mike from setting the voltages last year: drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/blog/lisa/setting-bias-voltages-or-2019
We will want to do this again and compare how the voltages changed from year to year.  It had been noted that we needed to set higher voltages for run 20 than we did for previous years.  I am wondering whether this is a result of the wider beam, so that more of the signal falls outside of the gate and thus appears as a lower signal.  We should be able to compare signals from the end-of-run 21 at 7.7 GeV to the beginning of this run with the same bias voltages to see if things have changed in a more apples-to-apples way.  After we set the bias voltages we should inform the QA team.

After one day's worth of data has been collected the epd team can start with the calibration.

Tac-Offsets

Jack has set the files for EQ1, EQ2 and EQ3 to zero, so there are no corrections to start with.  I have some notes at: drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/blog/rjreed/slew-corrections-epd

The instructions for the tac offset procedure can be found at: drupal.star.bnl.gov/STAR/blog/rjreed/tac-offset-files-epd
